This August is a real joy for moon gazers, with the "Sturgeon" Moon on 1 August and the Blue Moon on 31 August. Probably the best way to view the August supermoons is to catch them rising in the east at sunset. Moreover, wonderful events have been organised on the occasions of the supermoon. "Sturgeon Moon", August 1, 2023
View the supermoon from the following archaeological sites and attend evwnts taking place there:
• Mallia archaeological site, a Minoan Palace (20:00 - 24:00): Concert with George Chatzinasios and the Malion Choir.
• Tylisos archaeological site, a Minoan mansion (20:00 - 24:00): Jazz music evening in memory of Constantinos Kouvidis
• Gortyna archaeological site, the Roman capital city of Crete (20:00 - 24:00), "Poetry in Greek song" hosted in the area of the ancient market between the temple of Agios Titos and the Roman Conservatory.
• Or, go to Psiloritis mountain, on the Skinakas Observatory. On August 1 is an open day to the public (18:00 - 23:00). Visitors will be introduced to the operation of the Observatory, learn about the latest astronomy results, and have the opportunity to observe through the 1.3m telescope of the installation.
"Blue Moon", August 31, 2023
• Rokkas Archaeological site (20:00 - 24:00): "Tribute to Antonio Vivaldi" with the Symphony Orchestra of Youth of Crete of the Municipality of Heraklion under the direction of Miltos Logiadis, as part of the 2023 Rokkas' Festival.
• Skinakas Observatory. On August 31 is an open day to the public (18:00 - 23:00). Visitors will be introduced to the operation of the Observatory, learn about the latest astronomy results, and have the opportunity to observe through the 1.3m telescope of the installation.
